Organizations that own .org domains may soon find themselves paying a bit more to renew, transfer, and register new domains. The company that operates the .org domain, Public Interest Registry (PIR), has decided to raise wholesale rates from $6.15 to $6.75 per domain this year—a 10 percent fee increase, following last year’s 2.5 percent increase. Of course, smaller registrars that buy wholesale domains won’t want to eat that fee themselves, meaning that they will likely pass on the increase to customers.

PIR informed the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) of its plans in a letter (PDF) sent earlier this month. No reason was given in the letter for the rate increase, but it stands to reason that since other domain operators have raised fees (like VeriSign for .com and .net domains), that PIR doesn’t want to be left out when it could make more money.

The increase will go into effect on November 9, giving those who own or want .org domains another six months to take advantage of the current price. Although the 60¢ may not matter much to individual customers, groups that operate multiple domains might feel a little more pain in their wallets—especially nonprofits and small organizations that .org was once limited to.

PIR doesn’t require ICANN’s approval in order to raise rates, but it is limited by ICANN on how much it can raise them per year. According to ICANN’s registry agreement for .org domains, service fees cannot be increased by more than 1.1 times the previous year’s max service fees. The original agreement started out in 2006 at $6 per domain, meaning that 2007’s maximum service fees would have been $6.60, and 2008’s maximum is $7.26. It looks like PIR has a ways to go before hitting the ceiling for this year, unlike its greedier counterpart VeriSign, which has raised the prices for .com and .net the maximum allowable each year under its agreement with ICANN.

Israel is being sold off to the highest bidder. The Internet domain name israel.com is expected to fetch at least $5.5 million when it is sold at auction, said Monte Cahn, CEO of Moniker.com, which is running the sale.

Jean-Noel Frydman, 46, registered the domain name in 1994 and never imagined at the time it would be worth millions.

"Mainly, I didn’t want anyone to misuse it. That’s why I registered it," he said, noting he retains final approval on the sale at the May 23 auction.

Frydman chose to part with his domain this year because of the 60th anniversary of Israeli independence, which is today.

Well for years Domaineers have visited Germany.com and wept to see the above cat smiling on them and it looked like this miserable cat was incharge of Germany.com. Domaineers thought that this Great Domain name was going to waste but The owner didn’t talk with any of the domaineers.

Well the Germany World Cup (Football/Soccer) came and went, and where you suspect a fully developed site could have swept up a six figure sum at least from Sponsors, affiliates etcetera, this owner did nothing, and made nothing. Also a lot of disappointed people would have visited the site.

Well, where everyone else failed, Rick Latona has won through. He has come to an agreement with the owner to manage the domain Germany.com for him.

Here’s what Rick says on his site:

The owner refused to talk to domaineers. Anyway, I’ve secured a management agreement with the owner so it is now my responsibility. The site you see live on www.germany.com now is a site that my team built.

I’m looking for a sales person in Germany to help me sign on hotels and tour operators. If you think you might be that person, fill out my contact form.

A Man from Maidenhead has launched a campaign to ensure a corner of the Internet remains "forever English", John Sewell is hoping to raise support for a new domain name that will allow the English to show off their Englishness. He is asking people to sign a petition for a new domain extension dot eng or .eng

John Sewell has setup a website www.doteng.org to collect signatures for the .eng petition and afterwards will deliver the signatures to ICANN.This is not the only campaign , the Scots have there own movement for .sco (www.dotsco.org) and Welsh have there .cym (www.dotcym.org) .

Sewell says .eng is about

"remembering what’s great about England – tea, the Beatles, London, the Queen, beer, cricket."

While a spokesman for ICANN said Sewell probably won’t even be able to start the application process until next year.
